The CCrISP course is a two-day intensive programme for surgical trainees and practitioners. Participants develop skills to recognize, assess, and manage critically ill surgical patients, support vital organ systems, manage perioperative complications, and make complex clinical decisions through interactive sessions and realistic simulations.
Course Content
At the start of the CCrISP course, participants engage in hands-on practical training sessions designed to build clinical confidence and competence. You will learn to:
• Apply a structured, systematic approach to assessing critically ill surgical patients
• Detect early and subtle signs of patient deterioration
• Implement strategies to prevent complications and improve outcomes
• Understand the surgeon’s role in a multidisciplinary team
• Collaborate effectively with nurses, surgeons, intensivists, and anaesthetists
• Communicate essential information and provide support to patients and their families throughout surgical care
Day One: Systematic patient assessment, respiratory failure, tracheostomy and stoma care, perioperative cardiac disorders, cardiovascular management in shock, acute kidney injury, nutrition, and perioperative surgical site management.
Day Two: Management of unwell surgical patients, professional skills, pain and respiratory management, chest imaging interpretation, and complex decision-making in simulated scenarios, including virtual night shifts and moulage exercises.
Participants are required to complete mandatory pre-course eLearning, including the Participant Handbook, instructional videos, and multiple-choice questions. Assessment is conducted through practical skill stations and simulated patient scenarios. A certificate of completion is awarded upon successful performance.
